2015 15" MacBook Pro Battery Recall Notice and Options

Apple recently announced a recall on some 2015 15” MacBook Pro Computers. You can read full details and check your computer’s serial number here:

Apple will not permit us to perform the repair here in our store (nor in-house at any Apple Store). We are being required to ship affected computers to Apple for repair at Apple’s Repair Depot. At the present time, Apple is estimating that the service could take approximately 2 weeks, which we suspect will increase as more customers worldwide request this service. This is not a Quality Program like some we have mentioned in the past: this is a full-blown Recall, and a rather serious one at that.

We at Visionary Computer would like to present you with three options for having this essential service performed because we know it must be done as soon as possible, and we’re committed to making it as easy for you as we can.

Option 1 - Free

We can simply facilitate the repair. Drop your Mac off at our shop and we will process your repair as quickly as possible. Once your Mac has returned from Apple’s repair depot, it will be tested in house and then you will be contacted to arrange pickup. There is no cost for this facilitation of service.

Please note that we are not responsible for your data. Data loss is always a possibility with depot repairs; you should back up your data before bringing the machine in. We can back it up for you for a fee, but that will slow the processing of the repair.

Option 2 - Rental

We know how hard it is to be without a computer for any length of time, let alone a week or more. Therefore, we have made significant investment in some identical (but unaffected) 15” 2015 MacBook Pros. For a fee of $199.95, we will remove the SSD blade (containing all your data) from your Mac and install it in one of our rental units. You can use the rental for the entire duration of your repair - regardless of how long it takes. Once your Mac has returned from Apple, we will swap your SSD back into your computer. We have a limited number of rental units and they will be available on a first come, first serve basis.

There is a rare but real chance that some non-Apple software may have a license or component that is connected to the hardware of your computer, and might need extra labor to make it work in the rental machine; this is not included in the $199.95 rental cost. However, we believe this will be very uncommon.

Option 3 - Sell

If you do not want to deal with the hassle of getting the repair performed, we would be happy to purchase your Mac from you so you can pursue replacing the 2015 with a more modern Mac. We will determine the value of your computer based on the condition and configuration; a rough estimate is $750. We will be happy to use this opportunity to help get you into your new Mac!
